Dr. Ruth Katherina Martha Pfau was an emblem of devotion, commitment and service to the most neglected, if not rejected, people of the society: lepers. Her untiring efforts brought the leprosy under control and Pakistan became the first country in Asia to earn this status. Dr. Ruth's contribution to the society was gratefully acknowledged by the people and state during her life time. She was awarded Hilal-i- Imtiaz, Nishan-i-Quaid - i-Azam and Hilal-i-Pakistan. Furthermore, her mortal remains were wrapped in the national flag in her final journey, besides being accorded state funeral, an honor reserved for the rarest of the rare.
In recognition of her meritorious services to Pakistanis, State Bank of Pakistan has issued Rs. 50 Commemorative Coin from May 9, 2018. These coins have been issued through the exchange counters of all offices of SBP Banking Services Corporation.
It may be recalled that Pakistan has thus far issued only five commemorative coins to recognize Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Allama Iqbal, Mother of the Nation Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah, Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed, Abdus Sattar Edhi, and now Dr. Ruth Pfao. It is the sixth of such coins issued by the SBP.
