  • Sindh is the second largest province of Pakistan on the basis of population and also its contribution to agricultural progress of country.
  • Total area of Sindh 14.09 million hectare
  • Total cultivated area of Sindh 5.76 million hectare
  • Culturable waste 1.37 million hectare

  • Sindh grows a variety of field and horticultural crops.
  • Wheat, Cotton, Rice and Sugarcane are major field crops which contribute 70% of the total cropped area.
  • Mango, Banana, Chillies, Dates, Guava and onion are the major horticultural crops.
  • Besides promotion of Sunflower, Soyabean is also in progress.
  • Sindh produces 32% of Rice, 24% of the Sugarcane, 12% of the Cotton and 21% of the Wheat in the country.

  • Sindh Agriculture Department is the key players in development of Agriculture in the Province.
  • Beside policy and planning work, it has been guiding farmers, and providing services to facilitate them.

FACILITIES PROVIDED TO FARMERS
  • Paddy Wheat and Sunflower Thresher to farmers on 50% subsidized rates.
  • Laser land leveling equipment on 50% subsidized rates.
  • Tubewells installed on 50% subsidized rates.
  • Seed Graders provided on 50% subsidized rates.
  • Tractor Drawn Agriculture Implements / Plow provided to farmers on 50% subsidized rate).

Activities Initiated to Facilitate Farmers.
  • Agriculture Implement and Machinery.


  • Sprinkler Irrigation System installed (80% cost by Govt. and 20% by farmers).
  • Drip Irrigation System installed (80% cost by Govt. and 20% by farmers).
  • For development of land bulldozers are provided at hire charges of Rs.75/- per hour (POL will be provided by grower)
  • Laser land lever also provided on hire charge basis Rs.6000/- per month.

REASON FOR LOW UTILIZATION OF CREDIT IN SINDH
  • Slow pace of issuance of Pass Book to the growers.
  • Banks are reluctant to advance loan in calamity   affected area.
  • The documentation procedure is not simple.
  • Awareness campaign to motivate farmers is lacking / very limited.

SUGGESTIONS
  • In modern farming credit has become one of the crucial input for crop productivity.
  • Agriculture Department plan to establish Agro Service Center at district level. State Bank may direct commercial banks to open their office in each service center to facilitate farmers for credit.
  • With the increase in cost of Agricultural Machinery and input the lending institutions ensure credit availability accordingly.
  • Credit facility may be extended well before the commencement of Kharif & Rabi Season.

SUGGESTIONS
  • Loan shall be advanced to the farmers as per existing price of inputs.
  • Crop insurance futilities may be promoted.
  • ATM Green Card system may be introduced by the  credit extending institutions by fixing a limit.
  • Loan may be advanced on production of Farm-VII instead of Pass Book only.
  • One window operation may be promoted to simplify the procedures.
